Well observed identification of a commen character set/ theme/plot in romantic comedy- it s one that like you I happen to love!
Picture this. You’re an attractive male stuck in a dead end job, you don’t fit in in high school or just stuck in a rut where your internal monologue is so loud you can’t hear the people around you. Along comes the manic pixie dream girl. She’s incredibly attractive, high on life, full of wacky quirks and idiosyncrasies (generally including childlike playfulness and a tendency towards petty crime), often with a touch of wild hair dye. She is inexplicably infatuated with our white bread protagonist and on a mission to make his life SO TOTALLY CRAZY and fall madly and wildly in love again. However, this tired and tried trope has no background for her goofy ways, her only purpose is to light up the protagonists life, then leave. It’s that simple. The Manic Pixie Dream Girl is a completely flat character.
